Times are estimates: about 140 words a minute read aloud and about 240 read silently. Your own pace will differ.
Your file is processed entirely in your browser and never uploaded.
How to use it
- Paste your transcript into the box, or drop a .txt, .srt or .vtt file onto it.
- Caption files are detected automatically and their timings removed before counting.
- Read the counts and the estimated reading and speaking times.

Why does my word processor give a different number?
Word counters disagree about hyphenated words, numbers and stray punctuation. This one counts runs of text separated by spaces that contain at least one letter or digit, so bare dashes and ellipses are not counted as words.
How are the reading and speaking times worked out?
From the word count at about 240 words a minute for silent reading and about 140 for reading aloud. Both are rough averages, so treat the times as estimates rather than promises.
Will it count an SRT file properly?
Yes. Caption files are parsed and their cue numbers and timestamps removed before anything is counted, so you get the spoken words on their own.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. The counting happens entirely in your browser, so the transcript never leaves your device. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.
