Frequently asked questions

My captions are a few seconds behind, which way do I shift?

If the captions appear too late, shift by a negative number of seconds to move them earlier. If they appear too soon, shift by a positive number to delay them. You can adjust and re-download until it lines up.

What happens to captions near the very start when I shift earlier?

A caption can never start before zero, so any cue that would move to a negative time is clamped to the beginning of the file. The rest shift normally. If several early cues bunch up at zero, shift by a smaller amount.

Does this fix captions that drift more over time?

No. A fixed shift corrects captions that are off by a constant amount everywhere. If the error grows as the video goes on, that is a frame-rate or stretch problem a single offset cannot fix. This tool applies one uniform offset to every cue.
