Opus won the job nobody else could do well: sounding good at very low bitrates while adding almost no delay. That combination is exactly what a voice message or a live call needs, so WhatsApp, Discord, Telegram, Signal and most browser-based calling now encode speech with it, usually without ever telling the user.
This is why the format matters more than its obscurity suggests. If you have exported a voice note from a phone or pulled a recording out of a chat app, the file you are holding is very likely Opus, sometimes with a .ogg or .oga extension rather than .opus.
Why Opus transcribes better than its file size implies
A one-minute Opus voice note can be under two hundred kilobytes, which looks alarmingly small next to an MP3 of the same length. That size difference does not mean the speech has been mangled. Opus was tuned specifically for the frequency range human voices occupy, so it spends its limited data where the words are.
The practical result is that Opus punches well above its weight for transcription. The usual problems remain: a phone held at arm's length in a busy street is hard for any system to read. But the codec itself is rarely what stands between you and an accurate transcript.
