Whisper's language detector misdetects 44 of Hindi's 198 clips: 40 as Urdu, the same language in a different script, Perso-Arabic instead of Devanagari, on about one in five clips, and the rest scattered across English, Indonesian, and Spanish. Scoring a Perso-Arabic transcript against a Devanagari reference counts as almost total error on those Urdu-labeled clips even when the words were heard correctly. Restrict the comparison to the 154 clips the detector labeled correctly, 77.8% of the total, and the error rate drops to 32.5%, still far behind Spanish's 3.7% or German's 6.1%, and we have not fully diagnosed the remaining gap.
