Convert MKV to SRT

Convert MKV to SRT by uploading the recording and exporting captions. MKV is what OBS and most recording software produce, so this is the common path from a finished stream or screen capture to a subtitle file, with timings taken from the audio.

Captions for recordings and streams

A recorded stream or a long screen capture is exactly the kind of video people watch with the sound off, which makes captions less a courtesy than a requirement if you want the thing watched at all. MKV recordings are also usually long, and typing captions by hand for an hour of talking is a genuinely miserable afternoon.

Uploading the MKV and exporting an SRT collapses that into one step. The cue timings come from the speech itself, so the file drops into your editor or upload form already aligned rather than needing to be dragged into place.

Choose the right audio track before you caption

MKV files from recording software frequently hold several audio tracks: your microphone, the desktop or game audio, sometimes each guest separately. We caption the first track in the file, which is not always the one you want.

If your captions come back peppered with stray words from a video you were reacting to, that is the mixed audio being transcribed rather than a failure of the engine. Export the microphone track on its own and upload that, and the captions will follow only the speech you intended.

Frequently asked questions

My MKV already contains a subtitle track. Will you use it?

No. We ignore any existing subtitle track and generate captions from the audio, which gives you a fresh file you can edit rather than whatever text was embedded previously.

Can I caption a two-hour stream recording?

Pro covers files up to two gigabytes and five hours, which handles most stream recordings. For anything longer, split the file at a natural break and caption each part separately.

What if my captions run too long on screen?

Our free browser tools can split overlong caption lines and adjust timings on an existing file. Nothing is uploaded for those tools; they run entirely on your own machine.
